'With the Nikkormat EL, automation is your servant, not your master.. You can override the automatic system whenever you wish and exercise personal control over exposure to suit your pictorial ideas'...-Promotional campaign for the first automatic Nikon- |
Since the debut of the original electronic Nikkormat EL more than 25 years ago, there were many events, happenings and changes of course in the direction and philosophy of camera design. Come to think of it, back in those days one would imagine how a leading trend-setting manufacturer like Nikon has to play it safe to explain and lead the consumers to embrace the advantages of automation in photography while not losing identity. While decades later, we have to revert and explain the origin of simplicity in photography with a pure mechanical design camera. That is contrary enough, I think. There is no point to spend any pages trying to explain and elaborate more on advantages of an automatic camera here (Instead, I think that should be at the other way round, ha!). But since this is the first Nikon that offered automation, we may have to start from scratch to explain more from the concept, reliability issues, features and functions that the EL provides. Certain areas may look primitive judged by today's standards, but we should not take the perspective of a modern full-fledged SLR user to rate the EL. We are talking history here, thus tune yourself in before you start surfing this site. |
